This week your writing will be based on the picture below. Your first task is to make a prediction about what you think might happen next.

Think about:

  • Who is in the woods?
  • What are they doing?
  • Are they running away from somebody/something? OR are they lost?
  • How did they get into the woods?
  • Is there a way out?

The expectation is to write at least a paragraph, neatly into your book.

The short paragraph is based on the picture of the woods. Read the text and answer the questions below neatly in your book. Use a dictionary or the  internet to find the meanings of any words that you are unsure about.

Hours and hours had passed away, and she hadn't seen a soul. The feeling of trudging through the never ending woods was tiring and her eyelids felt heavy. The scent of the pine sap and earthly moss added to her lethargic state. She felt like she could close her eyes and sleep for a thousand years. She knew she couldn't though; being trapped in the woods when night felt wouldn't be a wise move. Making the most of the remaining daylight would be crucial, she knew.

In this lesson, you will be looking at adverbs, remember these are words that describe a verb (a doing word). Click on the BBC Bitesize link below and watch the video. Once you have watched the video, complete the sentences below with adverbs to make them better. I have attached an adverb word mat to support you.

Sentences to improve

  • The girl was frightened. ________ she looked around the forest.
  • She began to walk __________along the path.
  • She paused __________ to take a sip of water from her water bottle.
  • From the distance ahead, she heard a scream. The sound echoed ________ through the forest.

Now write two more sentences about the picture using adverbs.

Imagine you suddenly woke up and found yourself in the woods! It could be a strange noise that woke you up or rain drops falling on your face.

Continue the story and tell me, what adventure you went on. Consider the points below:

Did you meet somebody in the woods or did you go on your adventure yourself?

Did you fall into a hole that took you to another world?

Was you lost in the woods and suddenly you was found?

Was it all a dream and suddenly you woke up?

You can use any of the ideas above or you can use your own ideas. Remember to plan your short story carefully into paragraphs. Use the  planning below to guide you.

Paragraph 1 - Explain how you woke up and describe what you saw in the woods.

Paragraph 2 - Describe the adventure you went on and include any other characters that you met (If you did!)

Paragraph 3 - Explain how you got home and describe your feelings.

Use the word mats below to up level your short story. I would love to read your story so please email me your final piece!
