Phonics in Early Years
Phonics is taught in Reception daily and is a method that teaches children to read by pronouncing the sounds in the words rather than the letters. The children are then taught to begin to recognise the connection between the sounds and the letter, for example, the letter 'A' makes the the sound 'a' like in the word 'apple'.
The children move through their Phonics learning in phases. In Reception, we start from Phase 2 and move through to Phase 4.
We assess the children every half term to monitor their learning and make sure they are applying their Phonics knowledge when reading with an adult and in their provision.
