Hello! Let's start today with a quickwrite of the graphemes that we already know. Have you got your exercise book and a pencil ready? As your grown up says a sound to you from the mats below, can you write the letter(s) that represents it in a list in your book?
Now practice reading our tricky words as you join in with the tricky words song below.

Tricky Words Song

Today we are going to learn a new digraph. It is the digraph in the middle of the words:

h-ai-l   and   w-ai-t

If your grown up reads the words to you, can you work out what sound the ai digraph makes? That's right, it says ai. Watch the video below and see Geraldine the Giraffe learn about the ai sound.

Mr Thorne Does Phonics and Geraldine the Giraffe - Episode ai

Today we would like you to practice using the ai digraph by writing words and a short sentence. First can you write the ai digraph in your exercise book, like this:

ai       ai      ai       ai       ai       ai       ai

Your grown up will tell you what you need to do next.

Grown ups, please ask your child to segment and write the following words one at a time. If they are unsure of what any of the sounds look like show them the sound mats at the top of this page.

Now please ask them to write the following short sentence:

wait in the rain.

Repeat the sentence to them several times, counting how many words are in it. Ask them to say the sentence back to you, so that you know if they have remembered the whole sentence before they start to write it down.
