English: Reading and Writing

 

English is taught everyday with follow up English activities within provision that the children can complete independently throughout the day.  

 

Focus for Reading in Reception:

  • Hears and says initial sounds in words
  • Linking sounds to letters, naming and sounding letters in the alphabet
  • Begins to read words in simple sentences
  • Enjoys reading a different range of books
  • Can read and understand simple sentences
  • Uses Phonic knowledge to decode regular words

 

Focus for Writing in Reception:

  • Can write own name and other things like labels and captions
  • Uses clearly identifiable letters in their writing
  • Hears and says initial sounds in words
  • Can segment the sounds in simple words and blend them together
  • Attempts to write short sentences
  • Children can write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others
